Bollywood is known to draw inspiration from the various sources as from Hollywood, south Indian movies and many other real life stories. But when it is not taking out the ideas form these resources then Bollywood tries literary section of various authors for making movies.
If we turn the previous chapters of Bollywood then there are lots of movies that were made on the stories of novels. Now Bollywood is in the habit of adapting the stories from the various bestselling novels. Today we are talking about such movies which are based on the novels, so let’s check them out:
1. Guide (1965):
If we talk about the story that is adapted by a novel then Guide comes first in the mind. The story of this film is based on the same name novel “The Guide” written by R K Narayan. It is one of the master piece movies of that time that has achieved so many leading awards. Awesome performance of Devanand and Wahaeeda Rahman in leading roles made it more memorable. Although the story is driven from the novel but makers of this movie made some changes at the end of this movie to make it more interesting.
2. Devdas (2002):
Devdas is counted as one of the best movies in Bollywood. It is based on a Bengali romantic novel that is written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhay. This film has come in three revision as one was made in 1937, second was in 1955, and last but not the least was made in 2002. All the versions of this movie were super hit. In the third revision, lead roles were played by Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.
3. Omkara (2006):
It’s an adaption of Shakespearean novel named “Othello”. Vishal Bhardwaj is one of the best directors of Bollywood who is known by its music and different stories. The story of this movie was set in dusty and rusty UP with the top celebrities as Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor.
4. 3 Idiots (2009):
It is one of the highest earning movies in Bollywood. Story of this film is adapted from the best seller novel Five Point Someone written by Chetan Bhagat. Story contains a comical romantic drama with parental pressures on three students. The roles of the students were played by Mr. Perfect of Bollywood Amir Khan along with Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan. The incredible story has won many prizes and broke all the box office records of that time. It was the highest grossing Bollywood movie of 2009.
5. Haider (2014):
Haider is another adaption of William Shakespeare’s novel “Hamlet”, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. It was the third installment of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespearean trilogy after Maqbool and Omkara. It stars Shahid Kapoor as the titular protagonist along with Tabu, Shraddha Kapoor and Kay Kay Menon took this film to another level. Multi-talented Irfan Khan was also in the movie as a guest appearance. Novel consist the story of insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was awarded as the People’s Choice Award in the Mondo Genere category at the 9th Rome Film Festival. It was the first time when an Indian movie was awarded in Rome Film Festival.
Apart from these movies, there are lots of others stories are also there which were adapted from the novel. If we talk about the upcoming film that is adapted by a novel then Chetan Bhagat’s Half Girlfriend will be come as a movie in summer 2016.
