Murder mysteries are a part of most households in India in the form of novels, movies, and suspense dramas. These are not welcome in real life. Although most culprits get punished, some crimes get covered up or never get solved. Here is a list of top 5 murder mysteries of India:
- Sunanda Pushkar
Sunanda Pushkar was an Indo-Canadian businessperson and the wife of Shashi Tharoor, Indian diplomat and politician. The two made perfect happy couple since they got married in 2010. However, things got a little bitter after a Twitter incident on 15 January, 2014 which went public. Suddenly on 17th January 2014, a day after the incident, Pushkar was found dead in room 345 of Leela Palace Hotel, Chanakyapuri. The death was declared as the effect of overdose of some medications.
Nearly six months after Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a Delhi hotel under mysterious circumstances, no clarity has been made whether she killed herself or was murdered. On 1 July 2014, controversy over her death deepened when Doctor Sudhir Gupta of AIIMS claimed that he was pressured to give a false report in the case. On October 10, 2014 some reports declared that Sunanda died from poisoning.
On January 6, 2015 Delhi Police reported that Sunanda was murdered. An FIR was also filed. All eyes are now set on new developments on the case and some reactions by the former minister.
- Noida Double Murder Case
Also popularly known as the Aarushi, Hemraj murder case, the case involved everything from Tears, legal wrangles narco test, jail, and mystery. The Noida double murder case refers to the murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and 45-year-old Hemraj, a domestic help (live-in cook) employed by her family. The two were killed on the night of 15–16 May 2008 at Aarushi’s home. It still continues haunt the entire country and has become the biggest murder mystery ever. Nobody knows what really happened on the night of May 15, 2008. The facts still lies in darkness. This double murder case provoked public and aroused their interest like a crime story. This mysterious murder case received heavy media coverage.
The weapon used for murder weapon was never recovered. Later on, the post mortem reports were botched up. Surprisingly, the crucial evidences were destroyed too. And the whole country sees Talwars as the monster parents who would have killed their little daughter to save the family from disgrace.
- Amar Singh Chamkila Murder Case
Chamkila, the popular but controversial Punjabi singer was shot dead at the age of 26 together with Amarjot, his co-singer. The two were gunned down in the year 1988 while they were performing in Mehsampur village in Punjab. Chamkila courted a number of controversies in his time for lyrics. A lot of his detractors openly declared that the lyrics promoted infidelity. Chamkila was quite popular beautifully introduced the hypothesis of modern day relationships into Punjabi folk music.
The singer was warned time and again about his lyrics owing to the fact that most of these centred on infidelity (extra-marital liaisons). A number of theories and speculations went around the murders of Chamkila and his stage partner Amarjot, who was allegedly pregnant at the time of her death.
Some believe that terrorist groups were responsible for their deaths. Inter-caste tensions (Amarjot being from higher caste and the reported liaisons between the two) led to the murder. Professional rivalry was also deemed as the most common reason for the murder of Chamkila. At the time of murder, the singer was extremely popular for his songs; enjoying enormous fan following than others who had professionally established themselves. On the fateful day of March 8, 1988, Chamkila and Amarjot were gunned down by a gang of unknown youths who shot several rounds fatally with their AK47’S killing the singer, his partner, and other troop members. The murder took place at around 2 O’ clock.
Unfortunately, even 24 years the death of Amar Singh Chamkila, the murder remains an unsolved crime.
- Lalit Narayan Mishra Murder Case
This is yet another case that got into the list of top murder mysteries of India. It dragged on for over three long decades in lower courts. Interestingly, the case was heard by 19 different judges. Despite all attempts, the trial for the murder of Lalit Narayan Mishra, the then railway minister is still a mystery. It has also emerged as one of the longest running cases in India. The case has documents running into approximately 11,000 pages and recorded as the oldest case in the Central Bureau of Investigation files.
Mishra was a powerful politician of his time. He was also a close confidant of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi. On January 2, 1973 Mishra visited Samastipur in Bihar to declare open a broad gauge line. A grenade which was lobbed on the dais injured him seriously. Mishra was rushed to a hospital in Danapur where he died the following day. Since it was the first political killing of the country, the mystery deepened. A lot of people failed to understand why Mishra was taken from Samastipur to a little railway hospital in Danapur which was around 150 km away while best of medical facilities were available Darbhanga situated only at hour an hour distance. No post-mortem was ever carried out. It was the first case in India to have been transferred outside the state by the Supreme Court to avoid destruction of evidence. Eight people were accused in the case; Sudevanand, Santosh Anand, Gopalji, Ranjan Dwivedi, Ramasray, Dinyanand, Ram Kumar, and Arthanand.
- Nirupama Pathak Murder Case
This is the case of death of 22-year-old journalist Nirupama Pathak. Nothing has been proved until now. Pathak’s body was found in her Jharkhand residence on April 29, 2010. According to the autopsy report, the young journalist died of suffocation.
Subha Pathak, mother of the deceased’s mother was arrested by the police of Koderma for charges of murder. Priyabanshu Ranjan, Nirupama’s boyfriend was held for the charges. According to the Jharkhand police, Nirupama was killed by her own family her alleged affair with a former classmate from a media institute in Delhi whose baby she was reportedly expecting. The Pathaks however denied the allegations. Hence, the case of this journalist the list of unsolved murders.
